Caring for down garments requires special attention to preserve their insulation, performance, and longevity. If washed improperly, the down can lump together, reducing its capacity to trap heat and impacting the garment's overall functionality. Furthermore, inadequate drying can result in moisture buildup, leading to mildew growth that damages both the fabric and insulation. However, down garments can be safely washed if done correctly.
Follow these essential care and washing instructions to keep your down items in optimal condition:
Avoid over-washing
Don't wash down garments more than necessary, as frequent washing can lead to unnecessary wear. In many cases, a light cleaning with a moist cloth can effectively refresh the down item.
Check the label
Make sure to read the care label first for any specific guidance.
Use a front-loading washer
A front-loading machine is ideal as it is gentler on the fabric. Avoid top-loading machines with agitators, as they can damage the garment.
Do not overload
Wash one or two items at a time to allow proper movement and cleaning.
Wash inside out
Turn the garment inside out and make sure there's plenty of room in the drum. To reduce wear, close zippers, Velcro openings, and buttons before washing.
Select a gentle cycle
Use cool or lukewarm water, 30°C or 40°C, and a delicate cycle to minimize wear.
Choose a mild detergent
Use a mild, down-specific detergent free of bleach and fabric softeners, which can strip natural oils from the down.
