"Extending the lifespan of your garment is a great way to reduce resource consumption."
This guide provides essential tips and instructions on how to keep your sportswear in top condition for years – potentially decades – ensuring that both you and your training items are in it for the long run. And remember, extending the lifespan of your garment is a great way to reduce resource consumption.
Proper care is crucial for keeping your functional sportswear in great shape over time. Whether your garments are made from synthetic fibers, wool or other functional materials, the following general guidelines will help ensure they last longer and perform better.
1 – Avoid fabric softeners
Fabric softeners can encapsulate the fibers in performance fabrics, compromising their breathability, moisture-wicking properties, and overall function. Therefore, avoid using fabric softeners when washing your sportswear.
2 – Always air dry (except down items)
Tumble drying places significant stress on your garments, leading to wear and the creation of so-called lint. Air drying is a gentler option that preserves the fabric and function of your clothing. However, for down-filled items, tumble drying with a couple of tennis balls can help maintain loft and insulation.
3 – Act quickly on stains
For best results, treat stains – especially oil or grease stains – immediately. Apply dish soap or a designated stain remover directly to the affected area, let it soak for a few minutes, and then wash according to care instructions.
4 – Close zippers before washing
Open zippers may cause damage to garments and fabrics during washing. Thus, close all zippers before washing. And for extra care, wash zippered items inside out.
5 – Use wash bags for Velcro pieces and delicate Items
Velcro, hooks, or other rough details can snag and damage other clothes in the wash. Place sports bras, Velcro-equipped garments, and other delicate items in a wash bag to prevent wear and tear during the washing cycle.
