Shell and softshell
Correct care and maintenance of shell jackets and pants help extend and optimize their lifespan and performance, especially in terms of water resistance and breathability. However, avoid over-washing, as frequent washing can lead to unnecessary wear. As a general rule, shell and softshell garments should be cleaned when visibly dirty or after prolonged exposure to heavy rain, mud, or sweat.
Here are some key guidelines for washing and caring for your shell items:
Use a mild detergent
Wash your shell garments using a mild detergent. Avoid fabric softeners, bleach, or stain removers, as these can degrade the fabric's waterproofing and breathability. Detergents for shell garments can usually be found at well-stocked outdoor retailers.
Select a gentle cycle and lukewarm water
Use a soft cycle with cool or mildly warm water (30°C or below). Hot water can damage the waterproof coating and reduce the effectiveness of the garment's performance features.
Rinse until no detergent remains
Any leftover detergent can impair breathability and reduce functionality, so rinse thoroughly. Running an extra rinse cycle can help ensure all detergent and dirt are completely removed.
Air dry or tumble dry
Air dry your shell jacket and pants or use a low-heat setting on the tumble dryer. A gentle tumble dry on low heat can help restore the DWR finish. High heat, however, should be avoided to prevent damage.
Reapply waterproof coating
The DWR coating may lose effectiveness over time, but it can be restored with a spray-on or wash-in treatment, usually available at outdoor gear retailers.
